Why communicate on-platform?
Why staying in the Herpify messaging system protects you as a buyer or seller, and when it's safe to move off-platform.
The short answer
Communicating on-platform creates a timestamped, retrievable record of everything agreed between buyer and seller. If a dispute arises — about what was promised, what was paid, or what the animal's condition was — this record is your primary protection. Communications that happen outside Herpify cannot be verified by us and cannot be used in any support dispute we might assist with.
What the record protects you from (as a buyer)
If a seller makes a specific claim in a Herpify message — "this animal feeds weekly on live mice", "it was last shed two weeks ago", "I will ship with a heat pack and live arrival guarantee" — and the reality doesn't match, you have documented evidence of the misrepresentation. This supports a payment dispute with your card provider, a report to consumer protection authorities, or a review on Herpify.
What the record protects you from (as a seller)
On-platform messaging also protects sellers. If a buyer claims you promised something you didn't, or files a false dispute, your message history shows exactly what was discussed. Sellers who document sale terms in Herpify messages — price, animal condition, shipping method, any "as seen" disclaimers — have clear evidence if a buyer later misrepresents the transaction.
The most common scam vector
The vast majority of reptile purchase scams begin with a seller insisting the conversation move to WhatsApp, Telegram, or personal email before any real communication has happened. Outside the platform, there's no record, no verification, and no recourse. Herpify cannot help you if you were scammed entirely outside our platform.
Important note
Legitimate sellers have no operational reason to require you to leave the platform before any conversation has taken place. If this happens immediately, treat it as a red flag.
When it's fine to go off-platform
Once you've established trust through on-platform communication, it's perfectly reasonable to swap phone numbers to arrange a collection time, send a video via WhatsApp, or communicate by email for logistics. The key is that the core terms of the sale — price, what's included, any guarantees — are documented in writing on Herpify before you hand over any money.
